VISUAL STORYTELLING FOR
REPORTERS, DIRECTORS & PRODUCERS

 

OVERVIEW

Each participant will work on individual and group projects, creating scripts and storyboards. You will learn the skills of scripting, storyboarding, selection of images and basic editing techniques. Communication, interpersonal relations, Conflict Resolution skills, a desire to excel and computer literacy are assets to successful participation in this workshop. Instruction will provide materials to assist students in creating projects
.

The class is based upon the film La Jetee, produced and directed by Chris Marker. which uses still photographs, narration, sound effects and music to tell the story. This brilliant film is the model for “Twelve Monkeys” directed by Terry Gilliam, starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Plummer. For Newsgathering, it will strengthen your ability to create compelling on-air stories.

PREREQUISITES:
Writing skills ,
a digital camera or a regular film or throwaway film camera (You must have them processed onto a CD)
A PC with Windows XP or a Mac with I Movie

Richard Martin, Cinematographer, Producer, Director, Adjunct Professor at New York University teaching Directing, Television News Reporting, Lighting for Film and Video, Studio Techniques and Video Production.

This workshop will sharpen your storytelling skills and is a prerequisite for other classes we offer such as Directing for Film and Video, Reporting and Anchoring for Broadcast Television  and Producing for the Internet.

You will learn to create, design and produce media using digital technology. You will write and storyboard narratives, create still images using a digital or film camera, music and narration to tell stories that illustrates your projects in a 5 minute or shorter timeframe.

Producing and Directing your own video and film projects, News Reporting and Anchoring, Hosting a Talk Show, Video Blogging, Corporate Reports, Promotional  and Training Video, Commercials, Public Service Announcements, Trailers, and Streaming on the Iinternet. This hands-on workshop will position you to compete favorably with unskilled presentations in the above areas and prepare you for the media explosion that is in our future.

Outcome

Students will develop, research, writing and editing skills, narrative storytelling, continuity and flow. This process will enable filmakers, reporters , bloggers and producers to create their projects using still photographs and DV.The projects in the workshop will be streamed on the Drum Internet Television site and Showcase participants and demonstrate their work to potential employers and the world  You will have an understanding how good storytelling will improve your creative, writing and production skills. It will increase your opportunities  to find related work or pursue your own entrepreneural goals and careers.
