DIGITAL JOURNALISM WORKSHOP

This Television Reporters Workshop is an intensive class in television news writing and reporting. It emphasizes the skills necessary for television reporting and anchoring, writing to pictures and reporting live or on tape in the field. Student teams produce television news stories using digital still cameras, mini-DV Cameras, professional equipment on location, their own home computers, digital editing and a studio news set wth a teleprompter.

GOALS

The basic elements of television news reporting, writing and on-air presentation are the goals of this workshop. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to structure, write and present a field report, VOSOT (voice-over sound-on-tape news story), or on-air anchor presentation. You will also have a good understanding of the current issues in television broadcast news and a demo reel of your work.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The workshop teaches students  to produce  television news packages: research, story development, writing, interviewing, shooting, editing and narrating packages, as well as having  a basic understanding of interviewing techniques, editing, voice-over and  reading from a teleprompter. Production skills and newsroom operation is a key component of the course. AP and other sources will provide timely information on current news. Students will discuss current national and local issues and will be required to contribute to these discussions either orally or in writing.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The goal of this course are to help participants develop the following.

  1. How to write and produce a package for air on television
  2. How to tell a meaningful story with pictures and/or sound in under two minutes
  3. How to shoot, light and edit a package for air on television
  4. Interviewing and on-air skills
  5. Creating longer-length News Features
  6. Research techniques
  7. Students will edit and put together a news program including anchor intros and stand-ups
  8. Students’ work will be uploaded to the internet on Drum Television’s News Channel for viewing as part of our regular presentation. This program can be viewed 24/7 from anywhere in the world so family, friends, colleagues and potential employers can view their work.
  9. Each student will create a demo reel of their best work as part of their resume and duplication on VHS or DVD will be made available at a reasonable cost
  10. Guidance in preparing a resume.
